Orrin Hatch is a retired United States Senator, making him the longest-serving Republican Party Senator in US history and one of only two serving US Senators to come to Congress during the administration of President Gerald Ford.

Hatch was a practicing attorney before he was able to establish himself as the leading conservative voice in the upper chamber of Congress. Orrin has used his position to sponsor more bills than any other lawmaker as of 2018. He was also responsible for recruiting conservative Christians and Mormons to the Republican Party.

Early Life and Education, Who is Orrin Hatch?

Orrin Grant Hatch was born one of nine children of Helen Frances Hatch (née Kamm) and Jesse Hatch on March 22, 1934 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he grew up. His family was low-income as his father worked as a smelter. This meant that Hatch grew up in poverty. However, his ambition for a better life drove him to become the first member of his family to attend college.

While attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Hatch launched an amateur boxing career during which he entered the ring 11 times. In 1959 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in history. He immediately returned to the University of Pittsburgh to study law, earning his law degree in 1962. A little later he began working as a lawyer in Pittsburgh before moving to Utah in 1969 and continuing to practice there.

In 1976, Orrin Hatch launched his first bid in the United States Senate, challenging three-time Senator Frank Moss on the grounds that he had spent so much time in office and lost touch with voters. Hatch defeated Moss in the election and has since successfully defended his seat without the need for any significant opposition.

As a member of the Senate, Hatch once served as a senior minority member chair on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (1981-1987), the Judiciary Committee (1993-2005), and the Finance Committee (2018). In 2000, he made a bid for the Republican presidential ticket, but lost to then-Governor of Texas and eventual election-winner George W. Bush. He has also expressed interest in serving on the United Supreme Court but was never nominated for that position. The only time he came close to nodding was during President Ronald Reagan’s administration when he was shortlisted to replace Lewis F. Powell Jr.

In 2017, during President Trump’s inauguration ceremony, Orrin Hatch was the President-designate’s successor at the request of the new President.

Orrin Hatch Net Worth

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Orrin Hatch is said to have an estimated net worth of $4.96 million. The GOP senator was able to build this net worth from investments in finance, insurance, energy, and real estate. He is also said to have a large number of assets accounting for more than half of that amount.

Curiously, the United States Senator also made big bucks from his work as a recording artist for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He co-wrote a song with American country singer Billy Gilman and recorded an album with Latter-Day Saints songwriter Janice, Kapp Perry.

His wife and children

Orrin Hatch has been married for more than half a century, since August 28, 1957 to be exact. The longtime lawmaker married his partner Elaine Hansen earlier this year and the two have lived a controversial life ever since. In 2017, Hatch took to social media to celebrate his 60th wedding anniversary by posting a picture of him and his wife carrying a balloon that read ’60’ with Elaine written on it as his wonderful companion.

Together, the couple welcomed six children; Scott Luke, Alysa Luke, Brent Luke, Jesse Luke, Marcia Luke, and Kimberly Luke. They have 23 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. One of Hatch’s children, Scott, has made a career, not exactly in politics, but in Washington as a lobbyist. He works for the lobby firm Walker, Martin & Hatch LLC.
