Julija Adlesic, a 22-year-old woman from Ljubljana, Slovenia, has been sentenced to three years in jail for purposefully sawing off her hand in an attempt to claim a £925,000 insurance payout.
Adlesic, in collaboration with her boyfriend, orchestrated the gruesome scheme and presented herself to the hospital fully aware that her hand could not be reattached. She falsely informed hospital authorities that she had injured herself while cutting branches.
Just prior to the incident in early 2019, investigations by the police revealed that Adlesic’s partner, Sebastien Abramov, had been searching online for information on how artificial hands functioned. This evidence was used to support the fact that the amputation was part of an insurance scam plan.
Their plan was thwarted when the police recovered the severed hand and surgeons successfully reattached it. Adlesic, however, maintained her innocence during the trial, claiming that she would never purposely amputate her hand.
She expressed:
“No one desires to be disabled.
“My youth has been ruined. I lost my hand at the age of 20.
“Only I know how it happened.”
She was subsequently found guilty of attempted insurance fraud by a court in the city. Judge Marjeta Dvornik, sentencing her to three years, stated:
“We believe the sentences are fair and appropriate, and will serve their purpose.”
Her boyfriend, Abramov, was sentenced to three years in prison, while his father received a one-year suspended sentence.
