Kanayo Kanayo, a seasoned performer also known as Anayo Modestus Onyekwere, has provided some valuable advice to filmmakers in Nollywood.

In a post on his social media page, Kanayo Kanayo shared his observations about the typical settings in Nollywood movies and offered his advice.

The actor urged filmmakers to avoid always dressing a wealthy man in the traditional agbada or Senegal regalia, and instead opt for more comfortable outfits.

He also noticed how women are heavily made up with elaborate costumes when trying to portray regular night or cooking scenes.

He wrote, “Many Nollywood Producers present an inaccurate depiction of dressing/makeup in movies, all in the pursuit of a visually pleasing picture. THIS IS DECEPTIVE.
The truth is that many practitioners have failed to realize that film making plays a role in shaping the culture and traditions of the people. Wealthy individuals usually dress casually and are often recognized by their expensive watches, footwear, and t-shirts, NOT AGBADA.
How can a man be lounging in his house, fully dressed and lying on the sofa? How can a woman be adorned with heavy makeup while cooking? Many ladies even sleep with their wigs on, with a full face of foundation. Who does that? Dear colleagues, let’s be mindful of this.”

This is a significant part of my PhD dissertation entitled, “The influence of Nollywood in constructing and preserving Nigerian cultural identity.” You have just captured the essence of my research, calling for greater realism in the images we portray. By doing so, the industry will gain more credibility and develop a stronger presence that cannot be ignored on both the national and international stage. The music industry has achieved this with Afrobeat. Now, they are reaping the rewards like they struck a goldmine. Nollywood can surpass them.”
