Following its launch in 2009, the social media network Omegle, which connected strangers over the Internet, has been shut down.
The Chief Executive Officer, Leif K-Brooks, announced the closure, acknowledging the service’s positive impact of fostering connections worldwide, while also acknowledging misuse leading to “unspeakably heinous crimes.”
K-Brooks expressed that the decision to cease operations was rooted in the service no longer being financially or psychologically sustainable, despite efforts to keep it functioning.
While Omegle experienced a surge in users during the Covid-19 pandemic, it faced heightened scrutiny, including a court case where it was found liable for the pairing of a user with a pedophile.
