Argentina central bank plotting to put Lionel Messi's face on a banknote to mark nation's World Cup win

Reports suggest that Argentina’s Central Bank is contemplating the inclusion of Lionel Messi on a banknote following his leading role in securing Argentina’s first World Cup victory since 1986.

According to El Financiero newspaper, the Central Bank of the Republic of Argentina is keen on commemorating the national team’s historic success in Qatar and has been actively exploring concepts since before their dramatic 4-2 triumph in the final against France.

Images of the proposed 1,000 peso note have circulated widely, generating excitement among fans who are eager to see it in circulation.

According to EF, a significant factor behind the selection of the 1,000 bill is that it begins with a ’10’, matching Messi’s shirt number for Argentina.

While Messi’s smiling visage is envisioned for one side of the note, the proposed text for the reverse side is the team’s nickname, ‘La Scaloneta’.

In 1978, commemorative coins were released to celebrate Argentina’s first World Cup victory.

Similarly, commemorative coins were minted on the 50th anniversary of the passing of Eva Perón, the former First Lady of Argentina.

Under the leadership of national coach Lionel Scaloni, Argentina has achieved success in the 2021 Copa America, the inaugural Finalissima at Wembley Stadium, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
