Before Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, you had to visit the Name Rater, an official NPC in previous games which could rate and rename Pokemon Nicknames. However, the days of going to Name Raters to change Nicknames are over. You can now rename your Pokemon using a few simple steps.

It's strange for Pokemon Trainers to rely on a single NPC to change the nicknames of their Pokemon when they own the Pokemon themselves. As a result, the concept of Name Raters has been wholly abandoned with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

With this update, you can change your Pokemon's Nicknames from anywhere in Paldea without visiting those pesky NPCs.

How To Rename Your Pokemons?

Changing your Pokemon's Nicknames has never been simpler; here's how:

  1. Begin by pressing the X Button, which will bring up the Menu.

  2. On the left side of the screen, select the Pokemon whose Nickname you want to change and press the A button.

  3. Now, select Check Summary to proceed to the next page.

  4. When the page loads, press the X Button to change the Nickname.

  5. When you're finished, click the (+) Button to save your changes.

Is There A Limit To Changing Your Pokemon Name?

You keep renaming your Pokemon to whatever ridiculous name you come up with now that you know the steps. It is worth noting, however, that these steps will only apply to Pokemon that are currently in your active party and not those in your box. To change the names of the boxed Pokemons you have to move them out of the box and into your active party, then repeat the previous steps.

There are no whatsoever restrictions on what you can name your Pokemon, but inappropriate Nicknames are still prohibited. Such words are also prohibited when entering your name during the character selection.

Restrictions In Renaming Your Pokemon

There are a few other restrictions in addition to the box restriction. They are as follows:

  • You cannot rename a Pokemon that already has a Nickname that you obtained through trading.

  • Pokemon obtained through trading that does not have a Nickname can be given one, but only once.

  • Any Pokemon obtained through Mystery Gifts cannot be given a Nickname.

It should also be noted that the trade restriction applies to both Link Trades and Surprise Trades. And, as the name implies, there's a higher chance of receiving a Pokemon with a Nickname from Surprise Trades because you won't know what Pokemon you'll get. However, it is good riddance for those Pokemon you do not require.
