Chris Pontius commenced his collegiate career at UC Santa Barbara in 2005. He played 86 games and scored 29 goals in three seasons. Subsequently, he joined D.C. United after being part of the Ventura County Fusion. His professional debut and first goal came against the LA Galaxy on March 22, 2009. Despite injuries, he played 152 games for D.C. United, scoring 31 goals over six seasons. Later, he moved to the Philadelphia Union in December 2015 and then to the LA Galaxy in January 2018, staying until 2019. He announced his retirement in October 2019.
