Joseph Benavidez’ Bio

Benavidez was born on July 31, 1984 in San Antonio, Texas, United States. While his face is already falling apart, he is of Mexican descent. He grew up in New Mexico and attended Las Cruces High School. In high school, Benavidez began training in boxing and later wrestling.

To support himself as a young boy, Benavidez worked as a screen painter while aspiring to become a professional MMA fighter. In order to accelerate his hopes, Benavidez traveled to Los Angeles in January 2007 in hopes of meeting Urijah Faber, the MMA fighter then making waves in the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion. Benavidez had hoped he could impress Faber with his fighting skills enough to earn a spot on his team.

Unable to locate Faber’s gym upon his arrival in LA, Benavidez instead opted to fight at a random gym in Roseville, after which impressed observers told him how to meet Faber, who was also impressed with his performance. Faber offered him a job at his gym’s front desk, and a happy Benavidez flew back to New Mexico to bring his stuff to LA.

Joseph Benavidez rose through the ranks after small promotions before being signed by World Extreme Cagefighting in 2008. The rest, as they say, is history.
