Rhissa Ag Boula, a previous insurgent chief and politician in Niger, has initiated a movement opposing the military regime that seized power in a coup on July 26.

Ag Boula made this declaration in a statement released on Wednesday.

As per him, his newly formed Council of Resistance for the Republic (CRR) aims to restore the democratically elected President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, who has been under house arrest since the takeover.

“Niger is the casualty of a tragedy orchestrated by individuals entrusted with safeguarding it,” expressed the statement.

It is worth mentioning that ECOWAS imposed additional sanctions on the Niger military junta following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum to reinstate Bazoum.

Diplomatic efforts by the US, AU, and ECOWAS have proven ineffective.

ECOWAS has scheduled a meeting on Thursday to discuss the future course of action for Niger.

Meanwhile, military juntas in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea have expressed their solidarity with their counterparts in Niger.

Ag Boula led uprisings by the Tuaregs, a nomadic ethnic group residing in the desert region of northern Niger, during the 1990s and 2000s.
