The storm gate is open with a cold front moving through the region. The bulk of the storm has passed through the Truckee Meadows, but in its wake we still have a good amount of cold, unsettled air.

Most of Wednesday will be dry in Reno and Carson City, but some additional showers will pop up from time-to-time through the evening. It will be cold enough for snow in the valley through 11am Wednesday morning and then again after 5pm.

The pop up showers will be light to moderate, and brief. Snow showers are likely in the Sierra today, most of them light, but some of them could produce a quick 1-3” within a short time frame.

Driving Impacts

The main band is moving east impacting areas like Fallon and Lovelock Wednesday morning. Roads are slick in the western Basin and Range.

If snow persists, the National Weather Service in Reno may very well extend it to a later time. Snow totals for the central part of Nevada will range from one to four inches. Travel impacts are moderate along I-80 at Donner as well as eastbound towards Lovelock.

CHP Truckee shared video of a car that went down an embankment along I-80 east near Donner. The car landed on its roof and the driver suffered minor injuries.

Best chances for slick roads in Reno itself would be later this evening if a brief shower produces a dusting of snow, but the chance is only 20%. Overall, the driving impacts in the lowest elevations is just above low. Sparks and Fernley has a better shot at snow showers today than west Reno.

Also, watching for the potential for lake effect snow off of Pyramid lake, this would mainly impact areas from Fernley eastward.

Short term model

A Winter Storm Warning is still in effect for the western slopes of the Sierra, where most spots will see an additional 1-4 inches of snow, but localized areas could see up eight inches. The warning goes through 10pm.

A Winter Weather Advisory is also still in effect for the greater Lake Tahoe area through 1am Thursday for mainly a few more inches of snow, but some localized spots above 7000’ could see up six inches of snow through early tonight.

Winds will also be gusting to 65 miles per hour, blowing the snow around and lowering visibility. As skies clear tonight, freezing fog is also possible mainly along our mountain passes and east of Reno along I-80 Thursday morning.
