A woman is dead and another is in a serious condition with gunshot wounds after an hours-long siege in Adelaide that ended with a man’s arrest.
Police said they were called to a house on Elm Rd in Campbelltown, in Adelaide’s east, about 1.30pm on Saturday after neighbours reported hearing gunshots.
When police arrived they saw two women collapsed with gunshot wounds in the driveway of the property. One of the women was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other woman, 22, was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital where she is reported to be in a stable condition.
Police said the alleged shooter, a 51-year-old man, holed himself up inside the house, sparking a lengthy siege as officers surrounded the property.
Surrounding streets were shut down and nearby residents were evacuated or asked to stay indoors as police tried to negotiate with the man.
The man left the house about 5.10pm, police said. He surrendered to officers and was taken into custody at the City Watch House, where he was expected to be charged on Saturday night.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Graham Goodwin from SA Police said the man was known to police and related to the two women.
A crime scene has been set up at the house, where police say they have found firearms.
“It’s serious offending, serious firearms offending and any time firearms are involved, these are very serious matters,” Mr Goodwin said, the ABC reports.
“This investigation is only in its very early stages. There is still a lot more detail to come.”
