In a recent statement, Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, revealed that despite facing opposition, he is choosing not to engage in a fight with Governor Godwin Obaseki.

During an appearance on the TVC program ‘Journalists Hangout’, Shaibu emphasized his decision to refrain from retaliating against Obaseki.

Following the highly publicized conflict between Shaibu and Obaseki, which resulted in Shaibu being denied access to his office, the deputy governor publicly extended an apology to Obaseki.

Despite the public apology, there are indications that Obaseki remains displeased with Shaibu.

Notwithstanding the existing tension, Shaibu has declared his intention to contest in the 2024 gubernatorial election.

He expressed optimism that both Obaseki and Adams Oshiomhole, the Edo North Senator, will endorse his candidacy.

Shaibu stated, “Adams Oshiomhole will support me because the people of Edo want one of their own, and I am their representative. I am confident that Obaseki will also back me, and my name along with the PDP will appear on the ballot.”

Regarding the challenges he is facing, Shaibu emphasized, “I’m not instigating a fight. I am enduring opposition. Despite booking and paying for a hotel, a senior government official threatened to demolish the establishment, all because I am a candidate.”

He concluded by expressing his reluctance to engage in conflict, stating, “I do not intend to fight because once I secure the nomination, I require their collective efforts to govern the state. The state needs a unifier.”
