Mexican authorities have arrested Ovidio Guzmán-López, the son of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, also known as El Chapo, resulting in a surge of violence in Mexico.
Ovidio Guzmán-López, who is a prominent cartel leader like his father, was captured in Sinaloa following a six-month surveillance operation.
Commonly referred to as “El Raton” or The Mouse, Ovidio was apprehended on Thursday, Jan. 5, by the Army and National Guard, as announced by Mexican defense secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval.
The officials, not authorized to speak publicly about the raid, indicated that security forces had moved him to a military base in Mexico City. The arrest occurred amid a night of violence that caused chaos in the Sinaloan city of Culiacan, with residents being advised to stay indoors due to blockades and carjacking incidents instigated by cartel members.
The outbreak of violence was believed to be connected to Ovidio’s arrest, with Sinaloa governor Ruben Rocha Moya confirming that Federal Armed Forces had been conducting an operation in the Sinaloa village of Jesús María since dawn on Thursday, leading to violent events in the capital and other parts of the state.
A video documenting the violence in Mexico was also included in the article.
