Reports indicate that a 20-year-old woman lost her life when a homeowner in Hebron, New York, fatally shot her after her car entered his driveway on Saturday night.
The homeowner, identified as 65-year-old Kevin D. Monahan by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, fired at least two shots at the woman’s vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene upon the authorities’ arrival.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim’s vehicle mistakenly entered the driveway at the Patterson Hill Road address.
Monahan, who was uncooperative with the authorities and refused to speak with the police, was eventually apprehended by the New York State Police Special Operation Response Team after several hours.
Murder in the second degree is the charge brought against Monahan by the authorities. During a press conference, Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy stated that the victim, Kaylin A. Gillis, along with three other passengers, was looking for a friend’s house when the tragic incident occurred.
The rural area, with its limited cellular and internet services, led the group to mistakenly drive up Monahan’s driveway.
After the shots were fired, the group left the property, drove to the nearby city of Salem, and called 911.
Sheriff Murphy highlighted the tragic nature of the incident and emphasized that the department is in the early stages of the investigation.
