Olakunle Oluomo, the impeached Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, appeared in a Federal High Court in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta on Monday to face charges.
The former Speaker, along with two other officers of the state Assembly, Dayo Samuel and Adeyemo Adedeji, were brought before the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, over allegations of misappropriating N2.5 billion.
The alleged fraud took place during Oluomo’s tenure as the Speaker of the Assembly in 2022.
Aside from the N2.5 billion fraud case, 18 out of 26 lawmakers signed for his impeachment over allegations including high-handedness, gross misconduct, arrogance, poor leadership style, lack of focus and transparency, and causing conflicts among members.
Oluomo has vowed to fight back and has initiated legal proceedings against the members of the Assembly.
During the court proceedings, the EFCC’s counsel was absent, leading to an adjournment of the case to 29th February and 1st of March by Justice O.O Okeke.
Journalists barred from court
NewsNow reporter was present at the court but was ordered to leave by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) under the instructions of the Court Registrar. However, the Registrar denied issuing such orders and interrogated the NSCDC officer who claimed he only directed the journalist to meet the Registrar before covering the proceedings.
