The only lifelong bachelor to be President in the US James Buchanan is famous for leaving behind a troubled legacy as America’s 15th President. Buchanan is popular for other things too; He was probably not only the first gay US president, but also the only president from Pennsylvania and was the predecessor of Abraham Lincoln.
James is considered by many historians to be one of the most inept and worst presidents of all time due to his alliances with slave states and his inability to stop the civil war. Be inspired to new discoveries as we uncover lesser-known facts about the former president that stir mixed feelings among his people.
James Buchanan’s biography
James Buchanan is from Pennsylvania and was born on 23. April 1791 at Cove Gap to Elizabeth and James Buchanan Sr., a wealthy merchant and farmer. He attended Old Stone Academy and later Dickinson College, graduating in 1809. After college, Buchanan moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he studied law. In 1812 he was called to the bar and thereafter served in the military during the War of 1812.
Prior to his reign as the country’s highest office, Buchanan had an impressive resume and was no political novice. He was a successful lawyer, five-time member of the House of Representatives, Secretary of State under President James Polk and US Ambassador to Russia and Great Britain.
Political career and legacy
A member of the Federalist Party, Buchanan’s political career began in the Pennsylvania State Legislature from 1814 to 1816 and then served in both houses of the US Congress.
Buchanan became president under somewhat traditional but difficult circumstances. In 1857 he successfully defeated Republican candidate John C. Fremont and was sworn in as the 15th President of the United States. President Buchanan was a Democrat who opposed slavery morally but believed it was protected by the US Constitution. Although he tried to keep the peace between pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions in government, tensions still escalated. He remained in charge of national affairs during the preparations for the Civil War until 1861. The American Civil War (1861-1865), for which Buchanan was ultimately blamed, began a month after he left office to be succeeded by Abraham Lincoln. James Buchanan is usually ranked as one of the most incompetent and badass presidents in history. According to historians, his failure as a leader stems from his ideological roots.Buchanan retired to his estate in central Pennsylvania and saw the end of the Civil War. He devoted much of his retirement days to defending his handling of the events leading up to the Civil War. In 1866, the former President found solace in writing and publishing a memoir explaining his actions as President and blaming the war on the abolitionists and Republicans. After his book, Buchanan retired to privacy. Despite this, he always considered himself a good leader and a “competent public figure,” and hoped that history before his death would justify his recollection of any unjust pursuit. Buchanan died on June 1, 1868 at the age of 77. He was buried in Woodward Hill Cemetery in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
was he gay Here are the facts you need to know
Buchanan is the only American president who has never married. In 1819 he was briefly engaged to Ann Coleman, the daughter of a wealthy man. However, the marriage was never finalized as Coleman broke off the engagement that same year. The story goes that their engagement was an unfortunate one, not based on genuine affection. There was speculation that Buchanan was also seeing other women during this time.
Shortly after Coleman called off the engagement, she died unexpectedly. Coleman’s death was rumored to be a suicide and her father, who never approved of the couple, refused permission for Buchanan to attend the funeral. During Buchanan’s time as President, his niece, Harriet Lane assumed the First Lady’s social responsibilities.
Given that Buchanan never married and was the only US president to remain a bachelor his whole life, his sexuality raised eyebrows. Indeed, it is speculated that if American society had been more liberal in the 19th century and homosexual marriages had been allowed, he may not be known today as the only bachelor president in US history.
Some historians believe that during his lifetime, Buchanan had a very close relationship with William Rufus King, a senator from Alabama and Franklin Pierce’s vice president. Buchanan and King were so openly close and lived together that they were nicknamed “Miss Nancy” and “Aunt Fancy.” King and the former President were also considered Buchanan’s “better half” and probably did little to keep their relationship a secret. The two remained close until the King’s death in 1853.
While there’s no doubt that the two men had a relationship, Buchanan and King’s nature has never been officially proven to be sexual. In addition, at Buchanan’s request, all of the former President’s correspondence was destroyed after his death.
