BIOGRAPHY
Julie M. Benz was born in Pittsburgh, to a surgeon father and an ice skater mother. At three years old, she followed in her footsteps, and at 16, she participated – like her brother and sister – in the American Junior Ice Dancing Championship. A bad fall ends a promising career! A year later, she decided to turn to acting and began by joining a local theater group. In 1990, she made her first film appearance in Two Evil Eyes , a horror film by Dario Argento and George A. Romero . The following year, she landed one of the main roles in the series Hi Honey, I’m Home , which lasted two seasons. In the meantime, she took acting classes at New York University, then moved to Los Angeles.
After completing her studies, Julie Benz made a series of appearances in TV films and television series, including Married, Two Children , Our Beautiful Family , Sliders, Parallel Worlds and Fame LA . She also auditioned for the role of Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997), but the producers preferred Sarah Michelle Gellar . However, they offered her to play another character, that of the vampire Darla, which she played for a few episodes. She then continued with Ask Harriet , of which only 5 out of 13 episodes would be broadcast on the American channel Fox. But the young woman did not give up and found herself in Roswell , where she played Kathleen Topolsky in the first season. On the cinema side, she obtained small roles in For the worst and for the best and The Rebel Years (1997), then the following year played one of the main characters in the comedy Jawbreaker .
Luck smiled on him in 1999, when the writers decided to bring Darla back to life in Angel , the spin-off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer . She then became one of the important recurring characters of the series for almost two years. She nevertheless took advantage of the time the show gave her to film in a few films and TV films ( Scary Scream Movie , Satan’s School for Girls ). After the end of Angel , she continued her career on television, participating in successful series, such as NCIS: Special Investigations , CSI , CSI: Miami , Supernatural and New York Judicial Police. On the other hand, the films in which she acted were not very successful and her performances were not really noticed.
In 2006, his career benefited from the success of Dexter , the series with Michael C. Hall in the role of a serial killer. She plays Rita, the hero’s companion, for four years. The role allowed her to be nominated several times for the Golden Globes and the Emmy Awards . She won an award in 2006 at the Satellite Awards , in the “Best Supporting Actress in a Series” category. After Dexter , she played a femme fatale in several episodes of season 6 of Desperate Housewives . In the cinema, she finally got noticed by joining Sylvester Stallone in John Rambo (2007). The following year, she continued with The Punisher – War Zone , a film for which she had to be dyed brunette, then Saw 5 . At the start of the 2010 school year, she was in the casting of No Ordinary Family , a new feature on ABC with Michael Chiklis . She plays the role of Stephanie Powell, a mother who suddenly finds herself endowed with superpowers.
