Matthew Edward Patricia was born on September 13, 1974 in Sherrill, New York. The young Patricia was convincing both in teaching and in athletics. He wrote about football and wrestling while at Vernon Verona High School in Sherrill, graduating in 1992. After high school, Matt Patricia attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) where he majored in aeronautical engineering. He also played football for the school team, The Engineers, during his four-year stay at the school. He played in positions such as middle and end and graduated in 1995.
After graduation, Matt Patricia had the opportunity to get well-paying mechanical engineering jobs. However, he always had his love for football and he aspired to become a coach. He therefore stayed back at RPI to pursue his MBA while working as an assistant coach for the school’s soccer team. After a year at RPI, Matt Patricia got a job at an engineering firm called Hoffman Air and Filtration. He spent two years with the company. During this time he also volunteered as a coach for a local high school. In 1999, Matt Patricia quit his job and joined Amherst College as a defensive coach.
