The parents of Rocky Lombardi have imparted their coaching expertise to him and his siblings in the realm of sports. His father coached football, while his mother coached girls’ volleyball. Lombardi, a quarterback for the Northern Illinois Huskies, was born on June 30, 1998, in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Growing up in Clive, Iowa and attending Valley High School, Lombardi was a three-star prospect. Even though he had multiple college options, he eventually chose the Michigan State Spartans. After redshirting his first year, Lombardi was named Scout Team Offensive Player of the Week in 2017. In December 2020, he expressed his intention to move to Northern Illinois and received accolades such as the Manning Award Star of the Week, a Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Great 8, and the Manning Award National Quarterback of the Week in the 2020 season.

Tony Lombardi and Kari Lombardi are Rocky’s parents. The Lombardi family exudes a strong athletic pedigree, with Tony being a former football player turned coach. Born in Park Forest, Illinois, on January 29, 1962, Tony graduated from Rich East High School in Park Forest, Illinois, in 1980. He played as a tailback during his high school football career and also represented the Arizona State Sun Devils as a running back from 1980 to 1983, earning a varsity letter. Although he didn’t make it to the Chicago Bears’ roster after going undrafted in the 1984 NFL Draft, he transitioned into coaching at his alma mater, kickstarting a prosperous three-decade-long coaching career.
Kari, Rocky’s mother, also boasts a remarkable career in volleyball coaching. She attended Lakeville High School before pursuing her education at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Both parents previously worked as football and volleyball coaches at Washington High School.
Rocky’s Grandfather Bob Lombardi: A Coach
Bob Lombardi, Rocky’s grandfather, was a renowned football coach whose influence shaped the family’s football tradition. Born on June 3, 1938, he passed away on May 28, 2021. From 1976 to 1978, he served as the head football coach at the University of Chicago. He met his wife, Melinda, during his tenure as a football coach at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois.
Bob began his coaching career as an assistant football coach at Homewood-Flossmoor High School in 1961, where he also taught economics and math. His coaching journey led him to become the head football coach at Homewood-Flossmoor in 1967. Later, he succeeded his father-in-law as head football coach at the University of Chicago and was appointed as an associate professor in the Department of Physical Education at the institution.
