Reports have emerged of a shocking incident at a slaughterhouse in northern Hong Kong, where a pig being prepared for slaughter turned the tables by fatally injuring a 61-year-old butcher.
According to police, the butcher had used a stun gun on the pig as part of the slaughtering process, but the animal unexpectedly regained consciousness and attacked him, causing him to fall and sustain a severe injury to his left foot.
Tragically, the butcher was discovered by a colleague still holding a meat cleaver, and despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
While investigations are ongoing to determine the precise cause of death, it is believed that the butcher was knocked over by the pig during the struggle, resulting in a fatal wound from the blade.
Following this distressing event, Hong Kong’s Labour Department has initiated an inquiry and pledged to propose safety enhancements to prevent such tragedies in the future.
A spokesperson from the department expressed their condolences, stating, “The Labour Department is saddened by the death of the person and expresses its deepest sympathy to his family. We will complete the investigation as soon as possible to identify the cause of the accident, ascertain the liability of the duty holders and recommend improvement measures.”
Additionally, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, responsible for oversight of the slaughterhouse, extended their sympathies to the butcher’s family.
